"lundi 19 juillet
It's that time of year again. The exes-writing-letters time of year.My previous amours are divided in two camps - those who stay friends, and those who disappear. And every year around this time a few of the disappeared make themselves known again with the casual 'oh, I just thought I'd drop you a note' email. In the years before email, this was difficult to do. Ringing someone up revealed that you'd saved the number after the breakup, or worse - that you'd gone to the effort to find the new number. Now the investigation barrier has been lowered and I can expect a flurry of electronic missives from mid-June to mid-July.So far I have heard from the Asian fellow who was raised on a farm, the odd quiet guy with the cool tattoo, and the long drink of water my housemate wrote short stories about.Personally, I prefer to know about them without their knowing about me. To Google someone or look them up in 192.com or Friends Reunited, but not make myself known. To satisfy my curiosity without instigating awkward conversation. Though if someone makes the effort to contact me, it's difficult not to respond. There was one two years ago who dropped me a note; we now communicate regularly and I even spent a holiday with him last year. It was nice, rediscovering at a distance of time what I had liked about him in the first place without the pressure of couplehood. But he was an exception. Most of the time I keep schtum. The surprise this year? All of the exes are writing to let me know they're married. Do they expect gifts or something?"

Him, Her - by timo palonen
Him, Her
Him, Her BY TIMO PALONEN
Him
It's Friday night, I'm off to the bar just around the corner
My only thought is to get laid
or at least get drunk.
Straight to the counter
beer or cider
light up a smoke
relaxed pose
check out the place.
Over there, that one is mine.
But I won't move, just a quick flirt or a glance
trying to make eye contact.
A friend of mine with the same sort of ideas arrives
I point out my target.
He looks,
nods,
moistens his lips,
smiles approvingly.
Half way through the second pint
I've made eye contact.
She didn't turn away
our eyes meet again and again,
evaluating.
I wonder what she thinks of me?
Her
Oh fuck, what a moron
Him
A long look
She must be interested in me.
She's getting up,
coming this way,
did I score already?
Her
I need to pee
Him
No, she's passing me by
(oh, what a demanding perfume)
Well, okay, oh, okay . . .
I'll say something to her when she comes back.
What's taking her so long?
Her
Wanna bet
that he'll try to
to get in my pants when I return
Him
"You must be the most beautiful thing here tonight"
Her
Right.
"Hi, thanks"
Him
"Can I offer you a drink?"
Here we go,
I'll score all right!
Her
"Ok"
If nothing else,
I can get shitfaced for free
Him
I talk, talk, talk, talk.
I flatter,
I inquire.
I'm as interested in her as I can possibly be.
I even try to remember something she has said.
I try to make a good impression
I quote witty sounding lines from records.
Her
Learned lines,
memorized wittiness
Him
I'm making a good impression,
she'll never forget me.
My charm and my wit
will knock her pants off.
I buy her drink after drink
trying to get her drunk.
I drink some
not too much though.
(But godddddddddamn!
She has the biggest pair of
eyes
I have ever seen.
Eyes like that . . .
I could watch them the rest of my life)
Her
Wow . . .
he shut up!
Why is he just staring?
Him
Goddddddddddamn it!
Hopefully she didn't notice
I lost track there.
She really is nice looking piece of god's work.
Her
I just hope that
he is better in bed
than talking
Him
When the final call draws closer
I'm starting to hint
"My place, yes? Hmm?
My place?"
Her
Oh well
I think I have to make do with him
It's too late to find anybody
better
Besides . . .
I'm just too wasted
Bet I puke in the morning.
Him
I try to hide my excitement
I just do the last call
Her
"If we go to my place
I'll pay the cab"
Him
Ooo yeah!
Fucken A!
I can leave afterwards,
after I've gotten what I want
I don't need to watch my lay
No awkward moments
No need to clean up
I just can get dressed and go.
I nod to my friend as we leave.
He's still working on his skin
Her
About time to get out.
I was getting sick
I guide him to the next taxi stand
Not the nearest one.
I want to clear my head.
Him
I have never felt this way before.
She just took my hand
and I got hard
I have never felt this way before.
Her
Bet that in the cab line he kisses me
Him
Quite a line
I think I dare
I think I dare
I kiss her
Straight on the lips
Without hesitation
Her
Right
Him
In the cab
I ease my hand
under her blouse
Give the cabbie a show
Her
Right
Him
To the suburbs
Quite a long ride
Quite a big fee
It would have been cheaper
to go to my place
Won't say anything
she's cost me enough for the time being.
But she'll be worth it
I know.
In the elevator
I squeeze her butt
Her
Right
Maybe I should offer him something
A beer
Not wine
Him
I drown a half of it
(I just can not get it
I would like to see her again after this night
I have never felt this way before)
xxxxxxxxxxx
Her
He was better talking
Him
That was great.
Really great.
I bet I was the best she has ever had,
maybe I could stay the rest of the night.
Do it again
in the morning
I could get it up again
in the morning
Her
"Not tonight
no"
(Go away)
My parents are coming
in the morning
(Just go away)
Him
Ok . . . .
Where's my coat?
Where's my shoe?
"But hey!
Could we meet again?
I really would like to!
We could go
for a bite
to see a movie
It would all be on me.
I would pay it all!
Hey really!
You are pretty!
You are nice!
You are beautiful!
We'd look good together!
Hey what do you s-"
Oh, she closed the door already.
Her
Oh GOD!
He went
god, what a wanker.
obviously he was
starting to like me.
It was
a mistake
to bring him here.
Hopefully he was too drunk to remember
Where I live.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Back in the bedroom
she digs in the drawer
out comes a pocket knife.
She carves
yet another notch
into the wooden bedpost.
