Pull Back the Shade by Muzi Quawson

Pull Back the Shade is a photographic essay on American youth culture, which focusing on the lives of two girls as they emerge into young adulthood. Capturing their lives through a voyeuristic journey this transactions evokes a social documentary that reflects the instability they face within the clichés of post modern American culture, within the bohemian town of Woodstock, NY. Trapped by their own desires their life's are fuelled with dysfunctionalism. Pull back the shade is ongoing after two years, The essay focuses on the frustrations of motherhood from late teens to co-dependent relationships and the complexities of sexual identity. Deeply entangled is the emotional turmoil which is echoed through all that touch their life,from lovers to family and friends. Poignant is their spirit to remain free despite their troubled souls.

Muzi Quawson is a British photographer living in the UK. Her work concentrates on documenting dysfunctional youth culture and young adulthood which predominately focuses on self-destruction and alienation within post-modern America. Combining her photographic essays with the written statements and illustrations from the characters that she documents. Muzi, is in the process of compiling books from her series of works, 'Summer Here Kids' and “Pull Back the Shade”.

To date her work has gained recognition and awards through the Guardian Student Awards, Fuji Awards, London Photographic Award, L.P.A-5 and the Metro Imagery Bursary. Her work has been published in several magazines including Crash and Muteen. Muzi has internationally exhibited her work in the Speak For Gallery in Tokyo, Jousse Enterprise in Paris and the University of Canterbury, UK. Muzi shot the recent Twix advertising campaign for Europe and was commissioned by Random House UK to shoot Richard Dooling book sleeve for, “Bet Your Life”.

Wilhelm Reich (March 24, 1897–November 3, 1957) was a Jewish-Austrian psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, and author, who was trained in Vienna by Sigmund Freud.

In the 1930s, Reich said he had discovered a physical energy, which he called "orgone," and which he said was contained in the atmosphere and in all living matter. He developed instruments to detect and harness this energy, which he said could be used to treat illnesses like cancer or control the weather. His views were not accepted by the mainstream scientific community.

His first book, Character Analysis, is still a major psychoanalytical text. When his second book, The Mass Psychology of Fascism, was banned by the Nazis in 1933, and German newspapers called him a communist and a Jew who advocated free love, Reich realized he was in danger and left Germany, first settling in Scandinavia, then in 1939 in the United States, where he continued his orgone research. In 1947, following a series of articles about orgone in The New Republic and Harper's, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) began an investigation into Reich's claims about orgone therapy, and won an injunction against its promotion as a medical treatment. Charged with contempt of court for violating the injunction, Reich conducted his own defense, which involved sending the judge all his books to read. He was sentenced to two years' imprisonment.

In August 1956, several tons of his publications were burned by the FDA. He died of heart failure in jail just over a year later, one day before he was due to apply for parole.

The long awaited re release of Michael Gira’s (Angels of Light/Swans and Young God Records head) soundtrack-without-a-film “psycho-ambient” instrumental opus of sonic chaos and wordless lullabies. Compiled, edited, mangled, fed back, mutated and morphed from high quality recordings of a dizzying array of musicians using acoustic and electric instruments -performed in the studio - as well as loops and fragments generated from these sessions, found cassette recordings, sine waves and drones, live Swans recordings, electronic noise and the occasional insect, weeping woman, or a touching recording of a baby in the process of being circumcised. Gira’s archive of early (from as far back as 1982) analog synth, tape loop experiments and “slabs of sound” mingle and interact here with contemporary studio performances . Originally composed/recorded in 1998, this prescient collage epic summed up Gira’s 15 year (Swans) obsession with music as raw, mutable sound – alternately dreamy and abrasive, drifting from sweet acoustic melodies to music concrete in one breath. Sound-source contributions from Pan Sonic, Deathprod, Origami Rebulika, Swans and many more. The Body Haters disc contains a new track recorded specifically for this re release. Ultra lush (and expanded new) artwork by Nicole Boitos.

Deitch Projects cordially invites you to attend The Garden Party, an exhibition and performance program that creates a contemporary version of the fête champêtre. Following the art historical theme established by Giorgione and Edouard Manet of the erotic garden our exhibition project will attempt to update this theme in a contemporary context.



Following the Deitch Projects tradition, the interior of the gallery will be rebuilt under the direction of architect Lindy Roy to accommodate The Garden Party. Participating artists include: Ghada Amer, Assume Vivid Astro Focus, Hernan Bas, Vanessa Beecroft, Cecily Brown, The Citizens Band, Rosson Crow, Olafur Eliasson, Naomi Fisher, Micah Ganske, Noritoshi Hirakawa, Martin Honert, Liza Lou, Ryan McGinness, Julie Atlas Muz, Elizabeth Neel, Xiomara de Oliver, Yoko Ono, Laura Owens, Paola Pivi, Ravinder Reddy, Christina Lei Rodriguez, Mika Rottenberg, Momoyo Torimitsu, Julie Verhoven, and installation design by Roy. Co.



An opening reception for The Garden Party will take place on March 10, 6-9pm.
